Dr. Abayomi said this at the inauguration of the newly constituted board of governing council for tertiary institutions in Ondo State as well as the Local government council.

The event which held on Tuesday at the International Culture and Event Centre, the dome, was attended by academics, traditional rulers and stakeholders in the education sector.

At the event, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu inaugurated governor council for Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, AAUA; Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa, OSUSTECH; University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, UNIMED and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo.

In his charge, the governor asked the council members to take up the challenge of restructuring the state. “Do not be afraid. Be bold. We will support you and stand by you.

“Consider yourselves lucky indeed especially when there are men and women of exceptional talents.”

In a chat with SUNSHINE HERALD, the chairman of the governing board and Pro-Chancellor of AAUA spoke on why it had remained expediently unavoidable to increase tuition fee in the state-owned university.

According to him, a subvention fee of about N2.5 billion was made available for the school whilst the total money needed to run the university in one year is over N5 billion.

“The effect of this is that government must find a way to raise over 3 billion naira.

“If you look at the money taken from the students, it is not much compared to the need of the university. We have to find a way to get new income in order to sustain the university,” Dr Abayomi said.

When asked on where the new income would come from, the chairman said, “The new income will come from different sources, including students, it will come from their parents, it will come from foundations and grants.”

There have been agitations on social media against the purported increment in the school fees of the institution but the chairman notified, “all of that will be resolved within the next two weeks. I can assure you students will return back to school.”

While speaking on behalf of the other members of the governing council, Dr. Abayomi urged the people of the state to “pray for us ti succeed. Let the students and parents be also to ready to do the needful.”

Inaugurated also were Dr. Tayo Fawehinmi as pro-chancellor and chairman for UNIMED; Prof. Akinbo Adesomoju for OSUSTECH and Chief Banjo Alabi for Owo Poly.
